What is the scroll speed test?
The Scroll Test measures how fast you can scroll down a webpage using your mouse wheel. The tool counts the number of pixels scrolled in 5 seconds.
The scroll wheel is often used in games for Bhopping or weapon switching.
Scroll Rank Scale
Depending on your notched or freespin mouse wheel, find your rank:
| Speed (Pixels/s) | Rank | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 0 - 2000 px/s | 🐢 The Turtle | Basic scroll or slow trackpad. |
| 2000 - 5000 px/s | 🧑💻 The Player | Good speed with standard notched wheel. |
| 5000 - 15000 px/s | 🐆 The Cheetah (Pro) | Fast wheel. Intensive swiping. |
| > 15000 px/s | ⚙️ Hyper Scroll | Freespin unlocked mouse wheel (e.g. Logitech G502). |
How does the scroll speed test work?
Our Scroll Test measures the scrolling speed and distance of your mouse wheel in real time. It counts the number of steps your wheel registers per second. It's a unique tool that allows you to test the quality and responsiveness of your wheel.
Notched wheel vs. free wheel — The majority of mice use a notched (click) wheel that registers a discrete step at each detent. Some premium mice like the Logitech G502 or the Logitech MX Master offer a free-spin mode (disengageable wheel) which rotates freely without resistance - it is with this mode that the highest scores are achieved.
Practical uses — Beyond the fun challenge, the Scroll Test is useful for: checking that your wheel does not have reverse scroll (common defect), testing the regularity of the scroll (no jumps or backtracking), and comparing mice before purchasing.
Scroll Test: benchmark scores
Scroll Test scores vary greatly depending on the type of scroll wheel:
Basic mouse (notched wheel) — Typical score: 5-15 scrolls/second. Speed is limited by the physical resistance of the notches. To go faster, use two fingers alternately on the wheel.
Gaming mouse (high quality notched wheel) — Typical score: 15-30 scrolls/second. Gaming mice have smoother encoders and lighter detents. The Razer DeathAdder and Glorious Model O have excellent scroll wheels.
Free-spin mouse (Logitech G502, MX Master) — Typical score: 50-200+ scrolls/second. In free-spin mode, the wheel turns without friction. A single vigorous nudge can save hundreds of scrolls. This is some fun “cheating” for the records!
Why the mouse wheel is important in gaming
The wheel isn't just a scrolling tool — it has crucial functions in many games:
Changing weapons — In FPS games (Valorant, CS2, Fortnite), many players use the wheel to quickly change weapons. A responsive dial allows for faster switches between gun and knife.
